Live Scan in San Diego

san diego fingerprinting locationsSan Diego Live Scan Providers

Live Scan fingerprinting technicians across Southern California help thousands of people every year acquire and maintain employment, certifications, licensing, immigration, foreign adoptions and more. Seems like Live Scan providers are popping everyday in San Diego. Just because a Live Scan operation opens it doors, doesn’t mean your fingerprints will be processed correctly. For this reason, we published some Live Scan Tips and Lessons Learned to help the consumer.

Live Scan is now the standard in California and the Department of Justice (DOJ) created a network specifically designed to securely transmit digital fingerprint images. The technology used produces high quality, consistent fingerprints, reducing the rejection rates. Gone are the days of rolling your fingers in ink. That antiquated technique runs the risk of smudging, mishandling and mailing delays. With Live Scan, the results come back from the DOJ usually within 72 hours.  (Sometimes, the results are delayed at the DOJ. When this happens, the DOJ may contact the employer or requesting agency handling your employment or licensing.)

If the Live Scan provider is not experienced, your Live Scan may be rejected and this could delay your processing for weeks. Your fingerprints may also be rejected if your skin is scarred, scratched, cut or callused. AAA Live Scan’s technicians have years of experience beyond most of the other operations in San Diego. We know how to prep your hands to capture the most precise prints possible. Avoid delays and frustration, choose a Live Scan Provider in San Diego wisely.

Live Scan Tips Part 1

Live Scan Lessons Learned San Diego

With over 8 years experience performing Live Scan Services we have accumulated many lessons learned, best practices and surprising stories along the way.

We’ve found that sharing our stories with you not only keeps you informed but allows you to make better decisions on who to trust for Department of Justice (DOJ) certified, electronic or manual Live Scan fingerprinting.

Lessons Learned and Tips from the Field

New Live Scan facilities open all the time and many end up shutting down prematurely due to lack of attention to detail, poor management and shoddy customer care. Trusting your fingerprints to places that sell non-related products and services puts you at risk for delays and even denials of your fingerprints by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

We once heard a story from an applicant who said his data and Live Scan fingerprints were being handled by a cashier at a mailbox store while on the phone with the actual certified Live Scan operator. The applicant’s fingerprints failed and he was required to get them resubmitted, causing delays and stress. Lesson Learned: Make sure the person rolling your fingerprints is the person certified to conduct the Live Scan and transmit confidential personal data.

Live Scan requirements vary by profession and applicant type. If the Live Scan operator is not skilled and experienced with the differences in requirements and applications they can process your application incorrectly.  They will also be of no help to you in reviewing the application prior to transmittal.  An applicant recently visited us to retake his prints that were incorrectly processed by another provider. This other provider did not know that the Real Estate Live Scan form requires the Social Security Number (SSN) in two separate places.  TIP: As an applicant, carefully review the “Request for Live Scan Services” form required by the employer or requesting agency.

The search for the lowest price can be a misleading experience. Fees vary widely and there are many providers in San Diego that advertise extremely low rates . However, at closer inspection, the cost “out the door” ends up being much higher due to hidden fees that are not disclosed to you up front. TIP: If price is important to you, ask about all the fees that you will be required to pay, e.g., government fees. Many of our customers have mentioned that they wasted time and money trying to “save a few bucks” when in the end they were required to get their fingerprints taken again.

Many inexperienced Live Scan fingerprint rollers rely solely on the Live Scan software to tell them every exception or problem with the fingerprints or application. Inexperience often leads to oversight. Once the transmission is sent through the network to the California DOJ, there is little that can be done to correct a problem. Many applications bounce because the operator does not know how to troubleshoot the technology used.  TIP: Visit a professional Live Scan Service Provider that specializes in electronic Live Scan fingerprinting and has had a long relationship with the DOJ and industry and citizens in San Diego.

Certified DOJ Live Scan San Diego

“Certified DOJ” means that your Live Scan fingerprints are transmitted, certified and processed by the Department of Justice.  The California Department of Justice uses an automated service to perform criminal background checks. These background checks are required for licensing, employment, certifications, foreign adoptions and immigration/Visa.

The California Live Scan system began in 1991. In 1997 Live Scan became the state standard for fingerprinting.

The agency requiring the criminal background check provides applicants the forms and instructions to complete fingerprinting requirements. Many agencies have different forms so check with the requesting agency before assuming you have the necessary Live Scan paperwork.

The fingerprints must be transmitted electronically and it only takes a few minutes for the fingerprints to arrive at the Department of Justice. Using the Live Scan process, background checks can be completed with 72 hours. (Sometimes delays occur at the DOJ, but usually your background check is completed in a few days.)

The DOJ requires that fingerprints be taken by a qualified operator or law enforcement professional. Private companies and government agencies that qualify can process Live Scan fingerprints. Fingerprints travel across the network maintained by the Attorney General and are checked against criminal offender records database.

Data Privacy is important. Each Live Scan facility must handle applicant personal data carefully and securely. Live Scan Operators are required by the DOJ to pass their own criminal background check to obtain the certificate to take fingerprints.

It is our recommendation as AAA Live Scan San Diego that you ensure the person taking your fingerprints is concentrating on your prints and the environment is organized and free of distractions. DOJ certified prints can be processed incorrectly. We see many applicants each week that did not have their fingerprints taken properly by other Live Scan Operators and we are experienced in retaking fingerprints others have mishandled.

You are providing information about yourself when visiting a Live Scan facility.  Make sure the person receiving your confidential information is the certified fingerprint roller and not a co-worker helping customers with other business or sales.
